Buck welcomed Townhall.com editor Guy Benson to the Freedom Hut on Thursday to discuss the Senate’s progress on repealing Obamacare and how Trump firing Mueller would be a disaster.
“Trump’s aides had been arguing vehemently against the notion of him firing Mueller, but there were some people who believed they leaked the story to build a case against it,” said Benson. “If he fires Mueller, then it’s like a giant red flag.”
“I wonder if it’s just to prepare the battlefield ahead in a few ways,” said Buck. “One, you have them saying Mueller and Comey are close, so if things come out of this investigation — and there have been leaks already — some people in Trump’s orbit want to make sure there’s some doubt about whether Mueller is an objective actor here. But firing him is too much.”
“It would be a self-inflicted wound,” agreed Guy. “I have questions about how well Comey and Mueller are friends, and have been for years, and I wonder how objective Mueller can be about Comey. But people I know say Mueller’s reputation speaks for itself, that he puts the law and truth before everything else. Overall, I have confidence in Mueller, as do people on both sides of the aisle.”
Buck then asked Guy about the progress of the Senate bill to repeal and replace Obamacare that’s been kept under close wraps.
“It’s a tough balance, and they’ve got this working group trying to hammer out a compromise. That’s a tough road to hoe, they have to calibrate it just right. They are trying to hold their negotiations close to the vest, come up with something.”
“I’m not a great fan of this opacity. I understand strategically why they’re doing it. And I would also say, once the bill exists, and once it is released, it is going to be debated at great lengths,” said Benson. “Because this is a reconciliation bill, there will be unlimited amendments to this legislation. They call it a vote-a-rama. They are gonna debate and vote on amendments for as long as amendments are being offered. So the idea that this is going to be rammed through with no debate and no transparency and no public awareness and no ability to change anything — that is literally impossible given the reconciliation mechanism that they’re using to try to pass this thing without getting to 60 votes.”
