From Hero to Goat?: McCain Joins 5 GOP Senators in Killing “Straight Repeal”
Posted On 26 Jul 2017 /
Republican Senators Susan Collins of Maine; Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia; John McCain of Arizona; Rob Portman of Ohio; Lamar Alexander of Tennessee; Lisa Murkowski of Alaska; and Dean Heller of Nevada joined Senate Democrats in voting down a straight repeal of Obamacare today.
The straight repeal was identical to the one that the GOP-controlled Congress sent to President Barack Obama in 2015. Obama vetoed the bill.
Yesterday, McCain rode in to cheers to vote yes to bringing the repeal bill to the floor for debate. But when it came time to pass a delayed repeal, he joined the naysayers above.
The so-called “straight repeal” amendment would have given the Senate two years to come up with replacement legislation. Mitch McConnells’ Better Health Care Act, an Obamacare replacement bill, also failed.
There are no words to describe the disappoint many must feel who were counting on GOP legislators to pass a repeal as soon as possible. The notion that the government can coerce individuals into buying health care or face penalties still strikes many as odious and unconstitutional even four years out from the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling.
