To provide context on the approved motion to start debate on an Obamacare repeal as well as discuss the rest of the news on Capitol Hill, Vince Coglianese of the Daily Caller swung by the Freedom Hut on Tuesday’s show.
Buck began by asking for the meaning of the Senate’s vote. “What’s going to happen now?”
“This is a meaningful victory for President Trump and Mitch McConnell,” said Coglianese. “This motion to proceed is meaningful because it forces the bill into a position where they can now vote on amendments to begin the process of repealing Obamacare through reconciliation requiring just a majority of votes to pass those things.”
“You knew this thing had a real chance when John McCain of all people was flying in to take this vote,” said Coglianese. “That was a sign Mitch McConnell felt he had the right number of votes to proceed. We’ll see what they can do with that.”
“Let’s assume that everything goes to plan,” said Buck. “What are the next steps?”
“My understanding is they’ll have to go through some voting to figure out what the bill looks like coming out of the Senate, then conference with the House,” said Coglianese. “Mitch McConnell sought an immediate repeal and replace, the BCRA…they modified that a couple times, including getting Ted Cruz’s plan in place, where you could buy plans that didn’t comply with Obamacare’s mandates.”
“Republicans still have a lot to work through, but this first major hurdle has been crossed, and it’s a procedural one.”
