Last week, Buck covered the story of a University of Toronto professor who challenged a group of heckling students that had shut down a speech he was scheduled to give opposing codified language restrictions in Canada, which would impose a penalty on persons who used the wrong gender pronoun for a transgender individual.
On Wednesday’s show, Buck got to speak with that professor. Dr. Jordan Peterson had much to tell Buck about the fight for free speech on college campuses and beyond.
“I was there to criticize the move to make compelled speech a part of our legal system,” Dr. Peterson said. “I think that the incursion of government into the regulation of speech content is a terrible thing, and the fact that it happens to be about transgenderism to me is more of a side issue than anything else.”
Buck and Dr. Peterson covered a wide range of issues, from “unconscious bias retraining” to “misgendering” to a New York state law, unbeknownst to Buck and surely to many others, that imposes a civil fine of $250,000 for businesses who don’t use a person’s preferred gendered pronoun.
“I didn’t even know that, and I live in New York state,” mused Buck.
“It’s not only Canada,” said Dr. Peterson. “This form of legislation is popping up all over the Western world.”
Buck asked Dr. Peterson to recount the “boorish and insane behavior” of students who shouted down Dr. Peterson at the speech in a manner similar to the treatment given to conservative writer Charles Murray at Middlebury College earlier in the winter.
“One of the things that it’s necessary for your listeners to understand is that there are a number of disciplines in university that do nothing but train activists, so we’re funding a fifth column [whose] stated goal is to take down the patriarchy,” Dr. Peterson said.
“Apart from the fact that that’s appallingly slogan-dominated phraseology, it’s a veiled threat to the tenets of our civilization, which they believe has to be deconstructed and demolished. And that includes the necessity of free speech, as well as differences in men and women, which they believe do not exist.”
