A leading physician in the field of mitochondrial diseases and genetic myopathies who has treated other children with conditions similar to Charlie Gard’s is headed to the UK as part of a High Court’s reassessment as to the infant’s future, it was reported today.
High Court Judge Nicholas Francis said he was “open-minded about the evidence” to come after the visit of Dr. Michio Hirano of Columbia University.
“We’ll have to wait and see the evidence,” Judge Francis said, promising to give a ruling as to whether to allow the Gard family to withdraw Charlie from the Great Osmond Street Hospital by July 25th.
Hirano testified that Charlie has a 10 percent chance of improving with experimental treatment available in the US.
