Dr. Jack Sava, director of trauma at the MedStar facility where representative Steve Scalise is being treated, told the press Friday that Scalise faced “an imminent risk of death” at the time he was admitted.
Citing Andrea Mitchell of NBC News, Mediaite reported that the doctors, initially skeptical, now feel “encouraged” about his condition:
“We have controlled his internal bleeding and his vital signs have stabilized. He will require additional surgeries to manage abdominal injuries and bone injuries,” Dr. Jack Sava told reporters.
It’s been dicey since the beginning; Scalise has been through two surgeries and will require more.
Donald Trump initially tweeted that Scalise will “fully recover”
Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana, a true friend and patriot, was badly injured but will fully recover. Our thoughts and prayers are with him.

…but after visiting the hospital yesterday, the President shared that Scalise was having a tough time.
He called Scalise “one of the truly great people”:
Just left hospital. Rep. Steve Scalise, one of the truly great people, is in very tough shape – but he is a real fighter. Pray for Steve!

As shocking as this attack was, it would have been that much more so had Scalise died from his injuries on that first day, and it appears his road to recovery will be long. We are fortunate he survived.
