The news from Alexandria about Majority Whip Steve Scalise is not good.
Despite early signs that Scalise had stabilized, doctors discovered that the bullet that struck his hip injured internal organs. Scalise experienced shock while waiting for medical personnel to attend to him.
A statement from medical personnel read:
“Congressman Steve Scalise sustained a single rifle shot to the left hip. The bullet traveled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs, and causing severe bleeding,” MedStar said in a statement put out by Scalise’s office. “He underwent immediate surgery, and an additional procedure to stop bleeding. He has received multiple units of blood transfusion. His condition is critical, and he will require additional operations. We will provide periodic updates.”
Last night, the President and First Lady visited Scalise at the hospital. The President tweeted after the visit, eschewing his usual bravado:
Just left hospital. Rep. Steve Scalise, one of the truly great people, is in very tough shape – but he is a real fighter. Pray for Steve!

The baseball game for which Congresspeople had been practicing is still scheduled to go on tonight, though Trump will not be in attendance.
This morning, the Vice President also visited the hospital where Scalise is being held and thanked his doctors:

At any rate, prayers for Steve, “one of the truly great people.”
