Kentucky Republican Senator Rand Paul declared the impeachment trial “dead on arrival.”
Paul called for a procedural vote on the trial, claiming that Trump is already out of office thus the impeachment filed by the House should not be addressed by the Senate.
“Forty five [Republican] Senators agreed that this sham of a “trial” is unconstitutional,” said Paul in a tweet. “That is more than will be needed to acquit and to eventually end this partisan impeachment process.”
The Senate just voted on my constitutional point of order.

This “trial” is dead on arrival in the Senate.

To secure a conviction, at least 17 Republican senators were needed to vote for impeachment. The procedural vote shows that Democrats attempt to convict “citizen Trump” is now impossible to achieve.
Five Republican senators, Collins, Murkowski, Romney, Sasse and Toomey joined fifty Democrats to affirm the trial as constitutional and allow it to move forward.
