Buck Sexton weighed in on Steve Bannon’s explosive interview with CBS News on Monday night, saying he agreed with the former White House advisor that the firing of FBI director James Comey may have been the “biggest mistake in modern political history.”
“Strong words from former Senior advisor to President Trump Steve Bannon, who is making the case on ‘60 minutes’ that it was a disastrous decision to fire James Comey. So, we have to assume because that’s his positon that he didn’t recommend it […] That there are others in White House right now who clearly were in favor of firing James Comey,” said Buck.
“This could be the mistake that doesn’t just haunt the administration of President Trump, but that hobbles it. This could be the wrench in the gears, this could really not just slow things down but perhaps even bring them to screeching halt,” he added.
“I agree with the notion that however they ended up with a special counsel, they needed to avoid that at all costs,” Sexton said. “The series of events that led to the appointment of a special counsel was, in fact, disastrous for this administration.”
Buck explained the political pressure behind Mueller’s investigation, adding that charges would have to be brought against someone -most likely former campaign official Paul Manafort- to save face.
“I think that was a massive mistake from inside of the [Department of Justice] and I think the Trump administration should have done anything in its power to avoid this,” he added.
